Amplify Optics Immersion Program 2026

Description

The program will include 4 days and 3 nights preceding and overlapping with the Optica annual meeting Frontiers in Optics, 26-29 September 2026.

Participants will split their time between programming designed specifically for this group, joint activities with the Optica Student Leadership program, and attending FiO talks and programming. The activities for the Immersion attendees will include: 

  1. Overview of optics and photonics research, technologies and career opportunities.
  2. Introduction to Optica and of FiO technical program and special events with programming on getting the most out of the experience.
  3. Participation in the DLS Symposium on Undergraduate Research
  4. Participation in FiO activities including small group guided tours of FiO exhibit floor and the opening Plenary talk.
  5. Informal networking activities and meals 

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate or early Master’s student pursuing a degree in science or engineering or demonstrated interest in optics research and applications.
  • Self-identifies as Black

Application Packet Requirements

  • Name, university, academic level, and contact information of the applicant
  • Signed "Code of Conduct" form – provided in the application
  • Short answer responses (no more than 500 words) explaining the applicant's:
    • Interests in this program
    • Interests related to STEM and optics and photonics
    • Familiarity with Optica and optics
    • Educational and career goals
  • One (1) letter of recommendation from an advisor or similar faculty at your university
  • Copy of the applicant's university transcripts

If selected to attend, you must pay a $150 conference fee. Optica will cover:

  • Transportation to the conference (this does not include taxis/buses, unless you are local to where the conference is occurring)
  • Lodging (shared rooms, with arrival on Saturday and departure on Tuesday)
  • Most meals 
  • Registration for FiO
